Strategy orient this wiki[edit]

Let's face it, not many people actually are interested enough to travel to a Game & Watch wiki. However, there is a way we can attract users - change this wiki into one focused on high scores and strategies. What are some opinions? Examples would be listing high scores of each game and mentioning common strategies to obtain a high score. Mr. Anon 14:25, 28 November 2011 (EST)

We can create strategy subpages with high score tables, but changing the focus of the wiki seems a bit risky. BlindColours 14:27, 28 November 2011 (EST)
We could have like walkthrough pages for strategies etc. But high scores should be kept off the wiki. Sure, G&W isn't that big a subject but there will be a few people willing to help out, just ask on NIWA's forums. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:53, 30 November 2011 (EST)

Categories[edit]

Categories are a wiki's friend. Remember that when making articles please ;) ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:54, 30 November 2011 (EST)

Skin[edit]

I've made a quick skin design. Improvements are welcome. Just list them here and I'll get onto them. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 22:42, 2 December 2011 (EST)

Good work! But maybe we could make the colours more like Game and Watch colours? Also, where do that ads come from?--PSIWolf (TCE) 23:57, 2 December 2011 (EST)
i was thinking along the lines of the games were in black and white mainly so this sort of colour scheme. What colours do you suggest? ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 02:04, 3 December 2011 (EST)
I was actually thinking of firebrick/blue and beige, but that may be ugly.--PSIWolf (TCE) 02:05, 3 December 2011 (EST)
Looks fine to me. BlindColours 02:13, 3 December 2011 (EST)

NIWA collaboration[edit]

Is this wiki interested in affiliating with NIWA. If so, I will be glad to bring the edit count up to 75+ and will help with the process. Although for me to do so, I will need a confirmation. I hope someone will agree to this,

JORDAN DEBONO 06:19, 3 August 2012 (EST)

Although we're interested, there's still some work to be done here so I can't accept your offer right now. BlindCDSSonicSlots.giflours 06:29, 3 August 2012 (EST)
So long as I know your interested, I will get to work myself and expand this wiki as much as possible. But enthusiasm to join is all I need. So once necessary preparations are complete, will you decide to be a part of NIWA?
JORDAN DEBONO 06:56, 3 August 2012 (EST)
We would certainly like to be part of NIWA, but this Wiki really needs to pick up on the editing, and frankly, I imagine that even if we have a short burst of activity, there's a good chance we'll just die back down again. Still, I could be proven wrong. We'll appreciate all of your help. Toast Transparent U.pngltimatumSwadloon.png 08:43, 3 August 2012 (EST)
Are you found on every Wiki ToastUltimatum :P ?? So long as I know people want this wiki to a part of it, I will get to work. I know I'm a little narrow minded but I only like contributing to NIWA, or in this case (hopefully) pre-NIWA members. I will get to work either tonight or by Monday. Unfortunately I won't be around on the weekend.

Wiki Icon[edit]

I've realized this wiki has no logo / icon to represent itself. How can this be arranged? Is there anything I can do; for example finding / creating the picture ?

JORDAN DEBONO 01:17, 5 August 2012 (EST)

Guessing you mean the Favicon (icon in tabs/favorites etc.). You need to create an image and stick it into a favicon generator (many of those on the Internet) then upload it as File:Favicon.ico. Then we need to put a bit of CSS code in to make the favicon since Wikkii doesn't allow them as easily. However, ShoutWiki has an easier way and if we move the wiki there, it would be easier (I'm also a staff member there). ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:51, 5 August 2012 (EST)
As mentioned below, if it's for the better good than we move to ShoutWiki. However if for some reason this doesn't get done I will do this Favicon generator thing, but I might need assistance for the CSS codes. But thanks for answering,
JORDAN DEBONO 03:05, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Since we're now hosted by ShoutWiki, I think we can get back to this business. I have found and converted a decent image for our Favicon and generated it through here: www.favicon.co.uk. When I come to uploading it onto this Wiki, a warning appears saying the Image does not agree with the MIME... something like that. I cropped the image on Adobe before generating it if that makes any difference. JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 13:00, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
What is the file name of the image? is it "Favicon.ico" or some other format. It has to be a .ico file. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 13:05, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
The destination file name is: Favicon.ico This is exactly why I'm so baffled. Also, I didn't do a name change once I generated it. The file is also call Favicon.ico JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 13:26, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Attach the file to an email and email it to me at solardragon@shoutwiki.com I will try uploading it. If not, I'll ask the techs. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 13:30, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Sent it JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 13:33, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Found the problem. The image is twice as big as it should be. Favicons should be 16x16 pixels. This is 32x32 pixels. Can you email me the original image please and I'll try myself. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 14:28, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Sent it again. You know your way around these things, very impressive Solar Dragon. There aren't many people like you. Thanks, JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 14:57, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Still getting the same error message. It seems to think it's trying to overwrite a .png image for some reason so I'm asking the other staff for help with this issue. It should get solved soon. :) ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 14:59, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
It was a problem with the file. I stuck it through a different favicon generator and it worked. However, it doesn't seem to be very clear (see it here). It should update eventually and it's just a matter of waiting for it to appear now. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 15:06, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Hey you got it up :) It is a bit small, but I guess it's better than nothing. Thanks for your time and any other staff members involved, JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 15:08, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
The message above was written before I saw yours. It's good to know it will update itself, sound interesting :) JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 15:12, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Who's Online[edit]

Can somebody more experienced than I include the "Who's Online" special page please. It's a little confusing, and maybe the Technical Director (if there is one) can do it. Here's a link from MediaWiki for how to do so: [1]

JORDAN DEBONO 01:31, 5 August 2012 (EST)

Can't install it without asking Wikkii staff, who will most likely say no due to not liking to install new extensions for one wiki. Read above comment about moving to ShoutWiki though. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:51, 5 August 2012 (EST)

Moving to ShoutWiki[edit]

Several reasons why we should move to ShoutWiki:

  1. I am staff member there so I can keep a better eye on things.
  2. More extensions.
  3. More helpful staff.
  4. Good amount of freedom to do what you want.

I can help with the transfer etc. if need be. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 01:54, 5 August 2012 (EST)

I have no problem with it and if its better for the Wiki's sake lets do it. Although I was actually hoping this wiki could go independent instead... but if that's too hard let's do it.
JORDAN DEBONO 02:58, 5 August 2012 (EST)
It could go independent eventually but it would take time and money. We need more articles before we go independent and a larger user base. Moving to a better host will be better for the time being. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 03:40, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Well then, I'm all for it, if you're helping us move. Toast Transparent U.pngltimatumSwadloon.png 04:31, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Ok no problem then. If there's anything I can do to help, just tell me. I've never experianced this before, so I will need guidance every step of the way unfortunately. Although I have you note I'm very good at writing letters, so if we need to do so I'll be more than happy.
JORDAN DEBONO 04:47, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Anything benificial to the Wiki I'm willing to Support. BlindCDSSonicSlots.giflours 04:55, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Once Avengingbandit and PSIWolf agree, can preparations begin?
JORDAN DEBONO 06:09, 5 August 2012 (EST)
Debono thanks for reminding me to go back on here. I will go notify Bandit of the move ASAP. IceBlue aka IceMage: Shiver 05:36, 6 August 2012 (EST)
I support the move cuz I like the benefits--Avengingbandit 07:25, 6 August 2012 (EST)
IceBlue are you being sarcastic? Because if so, I didn't remind you because I didn't know you contributed here. It was never mentioned and you're not part of the Admin list. Anyways, your Icaruspedia profile doesn't say your a part of this wiki, and it also mentions your names on other wikis usually end with Blue, like LightningBlue on SmashWiki.
JORDAN DEBONO 16:44, 6 August 2012 (EST)
I will make the wiki soon then and link back to here afterwards. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 03:43, 10 August 2012 (EST)

Mainpage edit work[edit]

I can't seem to get a fix on it, but is anyone able to center the welcome banner and de-center the Help section. I've tried everyhting, but I can't seem to do it.

JORDAN DEBONO 06:18, 5 August 2012 (EST)

Also, can I move other discussions to the Community Portal? The Main page discussions is getting a bit crowded believe it or not.

Bots[edit]

How can bots be installed on a wiki? One would be needed to put the Welcome template on newcomers. Is this a simple process? JORDAN DEBONO 06:22, 7 August 2012 (EST)

To be honest, I never liked welcome message bots. Just look at Icaruspedia, the spambots are all getting welcome messages, clogging up Recent Changes. Personal welcomes are better in my opinion, as it gives the new user someone to consult, should they need help. Toast Transparent U.pngltimatumSwadloon.png 08:41, 7 August 2012 (EST)
Well nobody really makes accounts anyway so it would be a little pointless. However, you don't know if a spambot is a spambot until they start contributing, unless they have totally wacky usernames or Chinese gibberish. On reflection though, this Wiki needs to improve on other more important areas before. But we shouldn't disregard the idea; afterall, every major wiki has one and we need to aim high if we want success over here. JORDAN DEBONO 18:05, 7 August 2012 (EST)

Some concerns about ShoutWiki[edit]

I know it might be a little early, but there are some annoying features about this host. There seems to be a "Send to a Friend" notice which I really want to remove. The ShoutWiki messages is also another one. Will these just disappear or what. And I hope that the advertisements will go to. Any comforting replies please ? JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 20:22, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Also, why are the userboxes all appearing on the right. Is there a way they can be fixed? JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 20:29, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

The send to a friend link isn't in the way. It can be annoying at first but you get used to it. The ShoutWiki messages are for important site-wide messages so you can not get rid of them. Ads are needed to generate income for ShoutWiki. I would suggest you get an ad blocking extension (AdBlock Plus for instance) if you really don't want to see them. And what do you mean about the userboxes? It's probably just something to do with the code. Just link me to the bad templates and I will fix them. Solar Dragon (talk) 20:42, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but I meant some info boxes are shifting to the left, not right. Here's an example: Mario's Cement Factory JORDAN DEBONO 06:35, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Fixed. I'll check the other infoboxes as well :) --Cook879 (talk) 11:12, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Cook897 JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 12:37, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
These are simple code fixes. Notice any more, leave a message on my talk page and I'll fix them up. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 12:54, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Facebook[edit]

As a means of communication, shall I create a group on Facebook so we can discuss certain wiki problems at ease and without Talk Page drag? All I would require is your link to your FB userpage and I'll add you to the group straight away. If this doesn't please, I would use Skype instead. Many wikis use either one and even though I've never been a part of them I'm sure they'll come in handy. JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 15:11, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

It would never hurt to create a Facebook page. However, for discussion purposes, Facebook is not the right place and discussions should be had on-wiki to keep records of them. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 08:33, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
I see what you mean, although I was actually aiming for longer convos that would involve the whole community to participate. For example, getting G&W Wiki to go independant... something like installing a Favicon can easily be done here. It's just a drag to stay writing whole paragraphs like this one, something Facebook and group chats can overcome. Seeing as your not against it, I would wait for BlindColors to approve; then I'll get to work straight away.
JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 10:14, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Discussions about the wiki should be kept on the wiki. Facebook discussions aren't great as it is a lot harder to keep a record of them. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 10:26, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Facebook is much better used as a publicity tool.--Cook879 (talk) 10:29, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Well I think Cook879's idea is not bad although people hardly know the series let alone this wiki. Let's just forget it then, no problem. JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 11:47, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
The idea of it is to raise publicity for the wiki though... ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 11:54, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh I get it now, sorry. I have no objections however I won't want to create the group or even add friends to the group (or page). I'm not sure about you guys but back here, Nintendo and all their characters and consoles are disregarded and shunned upon. Its a Sony-Microsoft world over here and the amount of teasing etc. that would go on would be a little drastic. If there is something you can suggest, note I'm open to ideas. JORDAN DEBONO (talk) 12:12, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
