Game & Watch Gallery, known in Japan as ゲームボーイギャラリー (Gēmu Bōi Gyararii), was released in 1997 for the Game Boy. This is the first of Game & Watch Gallery series and it features four games. In Australia, this game is known as Game Boy Gallery 2. It was also re-released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Japan, on June 22, 2011, North America on July 14 2011 for $2.99, and in Europe on July 21, 2011 for £2.70.
Each game has a different gameplay, but the primary goal is to achieve as many points as possible before the player gets a game over. The game Fire has the character prevent characters jumping from a burning building, from hitting the ground, Manhole has the character holding a platform to keep other character from falling into the gap below, Octopus requires the character to gather treasure and avoid being caught by the Octopus, and Oil Panic has the character collecting oil from the ceiling to prevent a fire from appearing. If a player earns 200 points or more in any game, a star will appear on the corresponding side of the game in the "Game Select" menu. All the games play the same as the original systems, except for different controls and the fact that Mario characters are used.
- Modern- A modified version of the game using the characters from the Mario series.
- Classic-The original game with modified controls.
- At the title screen, Mario will do several things, such as pulling out a Game Boy and start playing it if the player do not press a button within a certain time period.
- A role call screen is shown if the player unlock all Rank Stars in Modern mode. Every character or item featured in each modern game is shown.
